Jones Francis Cahill

SAVANNAH, GA – Jones Francis "Jay" Cahill, 88, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Candler Hospital.
Born on December 8, 1920 in Middletown, OH, Mr. Cahill was the son of the late Jones Martin and Florence Elizabeth Smith Cahill.
A 1938 graduate of Ursiline High School in Youngstown, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1942 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He later did graduate studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Virginia, and Georgia Institute of Technology.
Mr. Cahill worked with the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics at Langley Field, VA from 1942 until 1955 and then with Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA from 1955 until 1987. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and was a Master furniture maker.
Mr. Cahill was a communicant of St. Joseph's Parish in Marietta where he served for many years as an usher, a 50 Year member of the Knights of Columbus, and conducted Bible studies at retirement communities in Marietta. During his residence in Savannah he attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lenora Black Woolard Cahill, and two brothers, William Martin Cahill and Msgr. Lawrence Patrick Cahill, S.M.
Survivors include his son, Jones Francis Cahill II and his wife, Deborah Goodson Cahill of Savannah and Dover, GA, his daughter, Maureen Agnes Cahill of Athens, GA, his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Cahill Hemmenway and her husband, Michael Hemmenway of Marietta, GA; his sister, Mary Elizabeth Cahill Dickerson of Cincinnati, OH; his brother, Thomas Aloysius Cahill of Madison, WI; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Habersham House for their loving care during his residence in Savannah.
A Memorial Service, to be announced at a later date, will be held in Marietta, GA.
